How We Verify Heavy Machinery Specifications

ExcavatorDex operates as an open, source-verified equipment intelligence database. To ensure technical data can be trusted by contractors, fleet managers, equipment appraisers, and logistics operators, models carrying the Source & Configuration section undergo our 4-tier provenance verification protocol. This program currently covers selected high-priority benchmark models and is being progressively expanded across the ExcavatorDex catalog.

01

Tier 1: OEM Primary Literature & Official Documentation

The baseline source of truth for every machine in ExcavatorDex is authentic manufacturer literature: official product brochures, factory engineering specification sheets, and certified operator handbooks (e.g., Caterpillar Technical Specifications, Komatsu Product Bulletins, Kubota Super Series Guides).

  • Direct citation of OEM document titles, publication year, and digital source URLs.
  • Strict preservation of regional variants (North America vs. EU Stage V vs. Tier 3 emerging markets).
02

Tier 2: Baseline Hardware Configuration Normalization

Operating weight and digging depths vary significantly based on front linkage attachments and undercarriage options. A machine weighed with an enclosed ROPS cab, auxiliary counterweight, and wide triple-grouser shoes can weigh up to 1,500 kg more than a bare canopy model.

ExcavatorDex Benchmark Standard: For provenance-verified models, the published benchmark configuration documents the available boom, stick, undercarriage, counterweight, and bucket context reported by the source literature.
03

Tier 3: Testing Standards & Metric Normalization

Engine ratings, gross outputs, and hydraulic flow capacities are governed by distinct international engineering standards. We strictly distinguish between Net and Gross power testing protocols as declared by the OEM, and isolate Main Hydraulic System flow from Attachment Auxiliary Circuit flow:

ISO 9249 / SAE J1349 (Net Power)Net flywheel power tested with full operating parasitic load (fan, air cleaner, alternator, and muffler) installed.
ISO 14396 / SAE J1995 (Gross Power)Gross engine output tested without complete auxiliary components attached, reflecting raw engine capability.
Main System Max Flow vs. Auxiliary Circuits (AUX1 / AUX2)Main hydraulic pump total flow is strictly decoupled from dedicated attachment/breaker auxiliary circuits, ensuring sound compatibility modeling for hydraulic attachments.
04

Tier 4: Multi-Stage Automated Data Quality (DQ) Gate

Human and scraping errors are inevitable across large machinery catalogs. ExcavatorDex enforces a multi-stage automated Data Quality Gate baked directly into our CI/CD build lifecycle (Pre-Build Gate DQ-001 ~ DQ-012 and Post-Build Rendered Artifact Integrity Gate DQ-013):

  • Entity Integrity & Routing:DQ-001 ~ DQ-005 eliminate cross-brand collisions, ghost models, model count drift, and reverse duplicate comparison routes.
  • Physical Consistency:DQ-006 ~ DQ-009 enforce mechanical sanity bounds (power-to-weight boundaries, tonnage class matching, same-class battle limits).
  • Source & Provenance Integrity:DQ-010 ~ DQ-012 mandate immutable build IDs, live source URL availability, and strict OEM observation concordance.
  • Post-Build Artifact Consistency:DQ-013 scans final rendered HTML, Schema.org ProductModel JSON-LD, FAQ text, and Compare battles to guarantee 100% agreement with resolved observations before release.
